What is all this nonsense about people not getting “preventative” health care when?

Question by 31 years: What is all this nonsense about people not getting “preventative” health care when?
we all have access to knowledge about how to take care of our bodies so that we don’t get sick? They teach it to you in middle school in class called “Health” or “Wellness” or “PE”. Everyday the morning news spouts off about some new study that proves that more sleep = better immune system or that exercise will lower your risk of heart disease.
How come so many people are harping on the need for preventative care, when we already know what to do- and people still don’t do it ? Everyone knows that if you -Eat healthy foods, Exercise a few times a week, have good Hygiene… that you won’t get as sick as often…As far as diseases like Diabetes and Cancer—- Let’s’ talk to the FDA about that…Let’s have an FDA reform bill!
What else do people really want?…Are we asking the govt to use our tax dollars to give us more pamphlets to take home from the doctors office- to pay for us to have gym membership? I guess if people are fined- then they’ll stop being lazy and glutenous… or maybe they’ll just pay the fine…
OK- point taken- I am young , but I have to say- that I still believe that many of the diseases we face today are because people don’t take care of themselves. Many more health problems, diseases, and illnesses are caused by the drugs that the FDA approves to treat the symptoms of lesser illnesses- and by the food that FDA deems as “safe”.
It’s not that I don’t wrry about getting really sick- because I don’t have insurance- I was denied for having gestational diabetes while pregnant within a year of applying. So I am sympathetic to some of what people have to say about Health Care Reform. I just think there is a better way to reform health care, and when we are talking preventative care- taking care of your body is a vital part of that.
It’s just that I realize that if people took better care of themselves all around, there would be less serious illness to pay for.

Wow, if only the real world were as simply as 7th grade.

Without preventative care we wouldn’t have noticed the symptoms of lymphoma (at age 14) and I would have been terminal when acute symptoms prevailed.

    I agree.

…Sweetie, when you become an adult, you may realise that not all illnesses are self inflicted, okay?

People who can’t afford insurance usually can’t afford out of pocket either. So when they get an infection, they don’t go to the doctor. They can’t afford prescriptions. When it finally gets terrible enough, they end up at the ER. And they can’t pay for that either. So the taxpayers foot the bill, and that’s exactly why so many ER’s are in the red. It ends up costing a lot more. Eating lean meat doesn’t stop pneumonia.

Some people are predisposed to things like diabetes, high chlorestorol, high blood pressure, cancer, etc. Often, being predisposed to these things means that even those people with healthy lifestyles can STILL develope serious health conditions. In this case “preventative care” referrs to being able to get regular checkups. A lot of insurance companies now make it extremely difficult to go to the doctor when you’re not actually sick, (and heaven help you if you if the doctor wants to give you something like an MRI or a colonoscopy) but seem to have no problem with paying for highly expensive treatments at the emergency room.

Well kid… you’re young. You haven’t yet opened your eyes to the world around you. The U.S. has thousands (I mean thousands) of citizens who are undereducated and very poor (we actually do have poverty in this country). When we talk about preventative care, we’re talking about actually having the opportunity to see a doctor when you’re pregnant, when you’re dealing with age related health issues, when you’re dealing with a STD, and so on. When you need money for basic needs like rent, food, basic transportation, usually the last thing on your monthly budget is that trip to see a doctor or a dentist. So, be calm and try to open your heart.

Right. We all know the US education system is at the top of the charts.

    /sarcasm.

I think you misunderstand the phrase “preventative health care”. It is not handing out leaflets, it is making sure that people who are in high risk categories for certain illnesses and diseases get regular checks ups to detect any symptoms early, therefore making treatment cheaper in the long term. The general population needs education on healthy living to prevent things like obesity and diabetes which cost the health care systems lots of money (but also make them lots of money at the same time)

Compare the body to a car. You can fill it with gas when it needs it, wash it every weekend, and check the oil and fluids regularly. This regular maintenance helps to keep your car in good condition but if you don’t take it to the dealer (who is a specialist and knows things you don’t) for it’s required servicing and maintenance it will break down at some point and the repair bill will be larger than the cost of the servicing.
